When visiting a beautiful and naturally diverse place like Costa Rica, it’s always helpful to know about the weather patterns. The information below hopefully will help you decide when may be the best time for you to visit Costa Rica.
Climate considerations in Costa Rica
If I talk about the climate, there are two distinct seasons in Costa Rica - dry and rainy/green seasons.
Dry season in Costa Rica
If your priority is visiting as many beaches as possible and do some exciting outdoor adventures, dry season is probably the best time to travel to Costa Rica. It starts in December and lasts all the way through April and is also considered high season for tourists.
Many vibrant fiestas, such as bullfights, live music and dancing festivals also take place during high season and serve as attractions for visitors to the country.
During dry season you also have an amazing opportunity to observe one of the richest wildlife habitats in the world from bird watching to sloths hanging out in the trees, to snorkeling with turtles or spotting jungle creatures. If you stay at Out of Office Villa, you get to experience the wildlife without even leaving the property.
Howler monkeys pay a visit to our backyard all year round, iguanas enjoy nibbling on the plants in the sun, and we have a variety of birds enjoying the coolness of the pool water. Always a fun attractions to observe without the need to leave the house.
You can see in the images below the difference in the trees on Out of Office Villa property during dry and rainy season.
Temperatures are something to keep in mind during dry season. For example, the temperature in coastal Guanacaste often reaches 90-100F (32-38C) degrees during daytime, and it barely cools down at night. However, if you are staying in higher altitudes, it is much cooler in the mountains.
Usually, Semana Santa, which is an Easter holiday week, marks the end of the high season in Costa Rica.
Green season in Costa Rica
Rainy season is also known as the low season. You will not see as many tourists visiting the country. Although there is a spike in summer when summer vacation time kicks in across the globe.
Green season in Costa Rica is best if you want to experience the true tropical and lush nature of the country. It rarely rains nonstop. Usually, the sun comes out in the mornings and the rain or showers start in the afternoon. Yes, there are occasional sprees of rain for a couple of days, but even with that, the weather continues to stay warm.
Rainy season usually kicks in late March to mid-April and may last through October-November.
When visiting Costa Rica in the green or rainy season, you will have to be a bit more flexible as not all days will be beach-friendly. On the flip side, you will avoid big crowds and that could be the best time to travel to Costa Rica for some of you.
Keep in mind, depending on which part of the country you are traveling in, some jungle forests in the central part of the country have rain and cooler temperatures all year round. Guanacaste province is unique because the dry and green seasons are very distinct here.
Visit Costa Rica while keeping your travel style in mind
In summary, depending on your preference and flexibility to travel, I advise you to consider what you like and what type of traveler you are.
Do you like spending days on the beach? Do you want a vacation filled with lots of action? Do you enjoy lounging at the pool in a hotel or vacation rental property? Do you like cool or hot weather? All of these things will help you decide the best time to travel to Costa Rica.
However, from my perspective, there’s no wrong season to visit Costa Rica. You will like it no matter when you come.
